A snowy winter path. Brilliant green summer fields. Blooming spring flowers. Color fall leaves. Each of these scenic descriptions usually ignites my inspiration and arouses my desire to take pictures. I look forward to the changing of each season as I love capturing the natural beauty surrounding me. When taking photos of individuals, I (and whoever it is acting as the model) hope for one of these magnificent backgrounds; however, I've found that my natural favorite photos tend to lean towards those lacking the radiant backdrop. For my own wedding, I chose a date in which there was a strong chance of no natural background. It wasn't until this recent engagement shoot that I realized why. Today's winter scene was one that isn't anticipated or wished for. At the end of December, most hope for the snow, but more often than not, both the ground and trees are bare. Such was the case today, and yet, I think the bare backdrop made for even better pictures! The couple and their love was emphasized and highlighted by the lack of distraction. There was no fight for the focus; while leaves and flowers are gorgeous, they often overtake and overwhelm a picture. The simplicity of this shoot may be my favorite yet. My cousin Stephanie and her fiancé Scott recently got engaged. There was no doubt it was coming. These two have such natural chemistry and are so sweet around one another. They were so natural and required very little direction. Scott was one of the absolute best guys I have shot so far! He had no nerves or camera awkwardness, and he just seemed to know exactly what Steph, my other cousin Jess (who also took pictures), and I were looking for. Very impressive! I'm so excited for these two and cannot wait until they finally tie the knot! It will be such a fun wedding! Here are some of the pictures I've finished so far. Enjoy! |

No matter how gorgeous, stylish, or well put together a couple is, photos don't produce natural emotion unless that emotion exists to begin with. Chemistry is crucial and proves to be the breath that gives a captured moment life.
When working with an engaged couple, I initially pose them and give a few ideas. However, my biggest advice is always the same: be relaxed and natural with one another, while remembering the camera is snapping. Instead of constant smiles or forced gazing, I like couples to just be themselves with one another. Pictures turn out best when there is natural flirting and chatting (with the occasional kiss or smile mixed in) between the two. Megan and Dave's chemistry is obvious in every picture of the two of them, and it remains one of the key reasons why their pictures were so much fun to take and turned out how they did. These two had "natural posing" down to a science! While I was running around looking for angles, these two were in their own world, laughing and joking with one another. It is that sort of passion and the idea of capturing it visually that makes me love photography. I'm currently in a state of picture-editing obsession.
Tonight I took photos for one of my friends, Megan, and her fiancé' Dave. Although it was a little chilly outside, it was one of the most fun photo shoots I've ever had! Megan also brought along her mom Diane, who proved to be the perfect assistant. I wish I could have her with me during every shoot. Megan and Dave are set to get married next October, so the current leaves added a perfect background to this couple. We couldn't have gotten a better day. Megan and Dave were naturals, and we were all so consumed with the photos that we barely registered how cold it got outside. It wasn't until I came inside that I realized I could barely feel my hands! During the entire shoot I took about 540 pictures. I am in love with the few that I already have finished, but there are many more left to sort through. This is my first "to be continued..." blog post. Enjoy the pictures now. More to follow!
